Opus Clip vs Riverside Magic Clips: what each one needs as input

By the KeyMo team · Updated

Riverside Magic Clips is a feature of a recording platform: it clips Riverside recordings or uploaded files, and Riverside says it cannot transcribe a YouTube link. OpusClip is a standalone clipper that takes many link types and charges by source minute. If you record elsewhere, a standalone tool is usually simpler. Checked 11 October 2026.

Riverside vs Opus Clip at a glance

Riverside is a recording, editing and hosting platform, and its own page calls Magic Clips one part of it: "Record, edit, clip, caption, and share-all in one place." OpusClip does only clipping and the editing around it. That difference shapes everything below. The figures come from each vendor's own pages, read on 11 October 2026. We did not run either tool on a test episode.

What Magic Clips needs as input

Riverside's help centre says Magic Clips are created automatically for content longer than 3 minutes that has a transcript. That content is either a recording made in Riverside or a file you upload. The same help centre says Riverside cannot transcribe a YouTube video from its link at the moment, so pasting an episode URL is not an option.

  • Upload limits: up to 240 minutes and 25 GB per file.
  • Accepted video types are WEBM, MP4 and MPEG. MOV is not on that list, although the same page says most videos from an iPhone Photos library, often MOV, can be uploaded from the app. AV1 and ISO files are not supported, and 10-bit HDR is converted to SDR.
  • External uploads are capped at 15 hours a month on Pro, Grow and Webinar. The upload-limit page does not list the Free plan.
  • Magic Clips do not use AI credits. Riverside's credits pay for other tools such as AI translation and AI B-roll.

OpusClip takes a link from YouTube, Google Drive, Vimeo, Zoom, Twitch, Dropbox, StreamYard and others, and its plans article lists Riverside links among the sources on Pro. KeyMo takes a YouTube link on paid plans, or an MP4 or MOV from 5 minutes to 3 hours and up to 10 GB. Link import fetches up to 1080p, and you confirm you own the video or have permission to use it.

Worked example: one 60-minute interview

Riverside says it typically finds 2 Magic Clips for every 5 minutes of recorded conversation. Over 60 minutes that works out to about 24 clips, and Riverside adds that the feature is experimental and results vary. The other two tools publish different guidance.

ToolWhat it says about a long episodeHow clips are ranked
Riverside Magic ClipsAbout 2 clips per 5 minutes, so roughly 24 for an hour. One automatic set; Pro, Grow and Webinar can generate up to 2 more setsScore from 99 to 70 relative to the other clips in the batch
OpusClipIts help centre guides 23 to 32 clips for a 30 to 60 minute videoVirality score 0 to 99
KeyMoTarget of 8 to 12 clips for up to 60 minutes; this is a built-in target, not a measured resultScore out of 10; only 7 or higher is kept

Clip count is not a quality measure. KeyMo keeps fewer clips on purpose, because anything under 7 out of 10 is dropped and a weak episode returns fewer. Riverside's scores only span 99 to 70 and rank clips against each other, so a 75 does not tell you the clip is good in absolute terms.

What each one costs

Riverside prices the recorder, not the clips. Pro is $24 a month billed $288 yearly and Grow is $34 billed $408 yearly. The monthly list prices read $29 and $39 in the page markup and FAQ, but one rendered copy of the page showed $35 and $45, so confirm the monthly figure before you buy. Riverside states no clip-minute quota for Magic Clips on any plan, so a price per source minute against a clipping tool cannot be worked out from its pages.

The Free plan includes Magic Clips, but lists up to 720p video quality and a Riverside watermark on all content. Riverside's Magic Clips page also calls the feature completely free, which sits oddly beside the 720p limit and watermark on its pricing page. OpusClip Starter is $15 and Pro is $29 a month at 1 credit per source minute. KeyMo Starter is $12 for 300 source minutes. See KeyMo pricing.

Where Riverside is stronger

  • Recording and clipping share one library, so there is no export and re-upload step when the episode was made in Riverside.
  • Clips up to 4K on paid plans, and animated captions with typeface, colour, line and alignment controls.
  • No credit charge for Magic Clips, and Pro users can generate more sets with custom duration, speaker focus and keywords.
  • Related outputs from the same transcript: 3 to 10 minute Magic Segments, full-length Magic Episodes and Hooks.

Where OpusClip and KeyMo are stronger

  • You do not need a recording plan. OpusClip and KeyMo are priced as clipping tools, with allowances you can read in minutes or credits.
  • OpusClip accepts a pasted link from far more places than Riverside, and takes videos up to 10 hours.
  • KeyMo takes a YouTube link on paid plans, which Riverside cannot transcribe, and lists MOV alongside MP4 for uploads.
  • KeyMo exports 1080x1920 with no watermark on any plan and keeps a source file for 7 days and clips for 30.

Which to pick if you record elsewhere

  • You record in Riverside already and want clips in the same place: try Magic Clips on the Free plan first, and expect up to 720p and a watermark until you pay.
  • You record in another tool and have an MP4 or MOV: a standalone clipper avoids paying for a recording plan you will not use. KeyMo covers 5 minutes to 3 hours.
  • Your episode is on YouTube and not in a file you hold: use a clipper that takes a link, such as OpusClip or KeyMo on a paid plan, because Riverside cannot transcribe from a YouTube link.
  • Your file is longer than 4 hours: Riverside's 240-minute upload limit rules it out; OpusClip's 10-hour limit does not.
