Submagic vs Opus Clip: two different jobs

People search for Submagic vs Opus Clip as if the tools were rivals. Read their own pages and they start from different places. OpusClip's help centre describes importing a long video and getting clips back. Submagic's pages lead with animated captions and text-based editing, and sell long-video clipping, which it calls Magic Clips, as an add-on. The figures below were read from each vendor's own site on 11 October 2026. We have not run either tool on a test video.

Plans as listed by each vendor on 11 October 2026. Submagic's pricing page and its own FAQs disagree in places; the cells say where.

Opus Clip or Submagic: a decision rule

  • Your problem is "I have a 60-minute episode and no idea which 40 seconds to post": OpusClip, or KeyMo. Submagic's listed video limits stop at 30 minutes on Business.
  • Your problem is "I already cut the clip and the captions look flat": Submagic. Its pages are built around caption templates, Brand Kit fonts and colours, and editing by transcript.
  • You clip long videos and want captions in the same step: OpusClip or KeyMo, since both caption inside the clipper. Paying for both OpusClip Starter and Submagic Starter is $34 a month, against $12 for KeyMo Starter.
  • You want captions on dozens of short videos a month and nothing else: compare Submagic's video counts, not minutes, because it meters by video.

Worked example: a weekly 45-minute episode

Four 45-minute episodes are 180 source minutes a month. Here is how each tool handles that.

ToolWhat the limits sayMonthly price
OpusClip180 credits at 1 per minute. Starter's 150 is short, so Pro with 300 credits$29 monthly, or $14.50 a month billed yearly
SubmagicA 45-minute video is over the 30-minute Business cap, so the episode would have to be cut firstNot applicable as listed
KeyMo180 of the 300 minutes on Starter$12

If you cut the clips yourself, the Submagic maths changes. Eight clips from each of the four episodes is 32 videos a month. Starter covers 15 videos, so you need Pro, which lists 40 videos: $39 monthly or $23 a month billed yearly. Every clip must also fit the plan's length cap, which is 5 minutes on Pro and easily holds a 90-second clip.

Where Submagic is stronger

  • Caption focus. Its pages describe 35+ animation templates that highlight word by word, a custom words dictionary and Brand Kit fonts and colours.
  • Editing by transcript: cutting words in the transcript cuts the video, with silence removal, auto zoom, B-roll and eye contact correction listed on its comparison table by plan.
  • Higher ceiling on export: Business lists 4K at 60 fps.
  • A public API with documented rate limits, and per-member pricing with Business offering unlimited users in its mobile comparison view.
  • No watermark on any of its paid plans.

Where OpusClip is stronger

  • Long inputs. Up to 10 hours, against Submagic's 2, 5 and 30 minutes.
  • Clip finding is the core product, not an add-on, and its help centre gives clip-count guidance by video length.
  • A free plan to test with, though clips are watermarked, cannot be edited and stop being exportable after 3 days.
  • Many import sources, a social scheduler and team workspace on Pro.

KeyMo as a third option

KeyMo is closer to OpusClip than Submagic: paste a YouTube link on a paid plan or upload an MP4 or MOV, and it returns up to 15 vertical clips with a score out of 10 and a one-line reason. Captions come built in, with 12 styles (Pro Glow, Bold Pop, Clean, Punch, Classic, Spotlight, Pulse, Karaoke, Reader, Duo, Slide and Headline) and word-by-word timing. A chat editor lets you ask for changes on a clip.

It has no free plan and no trial, and Starter is $12 a month for 300 source minutes. Submagic's caption library is larger, by its own count. See KeyMo pricing and the Opus Clip comparison.
