Reel and Story safe zone template generator

By the KeyMo team · Updated

This free generator gives you a transparent 1080x1920 PNG template for Reels, Stories, TikTok or YouTube Shorts: pick a platform, check the preview, download. Meta's published Reels ad margins are used for ads only, so every other template uses KeyMo's conservative recommendation and says so inside the PNG. Nothing is uploaded.

KeyMo's conservative recommendation

KeyMo's conservative recommendation. It reuses Meta's Reels ad percentages as a careful default and is not the platform's rule. Meta publishes percentages for ads only, and none for ordinary Reels.

Margins on a 1080 by 1920 template
EdgeKeep clearPixels
Top14%269 px
Bottom35%672 px
Left6%65 px
Right6%65 px

Safe box: 950 x 979 px, from x 65 and y 269.

The PNG names its margin source, so it never passes as a platform file.

How to use the template

  1. Pick the platform. Tick the ad box only for a paid Reels ad, which switches to Meta's published ad margins.
  2. Choose shaded edges with a dashed box, or the dashed box alone if you want a lighter guide.
  3. Check the 9:16 preview and the pixel table, then download the 1080x1920 PNG.
  4. Place the PNG on the top layer of your editor, keep text and faces inside the dashed box, and hide the layer before exporting.

Which margins each template uses

Sources as read on 11 October 2026 for the safe-zone checker; the same margins are reused here.

Instagram Reels, paid ad14% top, 35% bottom, 6% each sideMeta Ads Guide for Reels ads
Instagram Reels, regularSame four percentagesKeyMo's recommendation; no Meta figure for ordinary Reels in the pages we read
Instagram StoriesSame four percentagesKeyMo's recommendation; no figure for ordinary Stories, and Meta's Story ad pages disagree (see the Story safe zone page)
TikTokSame four percentagesKeyMo's recommendation; TikTok offers its own downloadable files
YouTube ShortsSame four percentagesKeyMo's recommendation; YouTube states no figure

On 1080x1920 the percentages become 269 px at the top, 672 px at the bottom and 65 px on each side, leaving a 950 x 979 px safe box. These pixels are arithmetic on the percentages, not platform figures.

Template or checker?

This page hands you a ready file at a fixed size. If you want to test a caption block, load your own frame or enter your own margins, use the safe zone checker. For background, see the Instagram Story safe zone page and the safe zone glossary entry.

KeyMo turns long videos and podcasts into scored, captioned 9:16 clips at 1080x1920. It has no free plan; see the pricing page. Caption styles sit in different places, so load a frame of your export against this template before posting.

FAQ

What size is the safe zone template?

1080x1920 pixels, the 9:16 frame used by Reels, Stories, TikTok and Shorts. It is a transparent PNG you place above your video.

Is this the official Instagram Story safe zone?

No. We found no figure for ordinary Stories, and Meta's Story ad pages disagree with each other. The Story template uses KeyMo's conservative recommendation, and the PNG says so.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The tool never asks for a video. The PNG is generated in your browser.

Why are the margins the same on every platform?

No other platform publishes figures we could cite, so we reuse Meta's ad percentages as a careful default. If you have a platform's own template, use the safe zone checker's own-margins option.
