What is a MOV file?
By the KeyMo team · Updated
MOV is the file format of Apple's QuickTime, saved with the .mov extension. It is a container that holds video, audio and other tracks. Apple says the QuickTime format is the basis of the MPEG-4 standard while remaining a distinct file type. YouTube accepts MOV uploads, and KeyMo accepts them alongside MP4.
MOV meaning and definition
A MOV file is a container, not a picture format and not a codec. Apple describes the QuickTime File Format as accommodating many kinds of digital multimedia data. Inside, the file is built from atoms: movie atoms describe the movie data, track atoms define one track, and media atoms describe a track's media type and sample data.
The word is also an electronics abbreviation, which is a different subject. This page is about video.
MOV came from QuickTime. MP4 is the ISO-defined format, and the next section sets the two side by side.
MOV compared with MP4

The TikTok row is about in-feed ads, not organic uploads, which the pages we could read did not cover.
Phone footage, codecs and what the extension hides
The .mov at the end of a name tells you the container, not what is inside. Apple lets an iPhone or iPad capture in HEVC (also called H.265) or, under Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible, in the older H.264, which is more broadly compatible. If a MOV from your phone will not open in a tool, check the video codec first.
Renaming a .mov to .mp4 does not convert it. It only changes the label, and the codec and container inside are the same.
Uploading a MOV to KeyMo
KeyMo takes MP4 or MOV uploads from 5 minutes to 3 hours long, up to 10 GB each, and the plan limit for a single source video is 180 minutes. If your recording is already a .mov in that range, upload it as it is. Convert only if it is over the size limit or will not play on your machine.
- Recorded the interview on a phone? Upload the .mov directly.
- Exported from an editor as MOV? Check that the file is under 10 GB.
- Pulled a YouTube link instead? Link import is for paid plans and fetches up to 1080p, and you must own the video or have permission.
Common mistakes
- Assuming MOV is always lossless. The container does not decide quality; the codec and bitrate do.
- Sending HEVC to someone whose device cannot play it. Apple notes that sharing may convert media to a more compatible format such as H.264.
- Exporting a 3-hour 4K MOV when the source only needs 1080p. See bitrate.
