What is a podcast clip?
By the KeyMo team · Updated
A podcast clip is a short excerpt from an episode, cut so it makes sense without the rest. KeyMo's options run from 15 to 90 seconds, made for Shorts, Reels and TikTok, and are vertical and captioned. A 60-minute episode usually has room for several clips, not dozens, because few moments hold up on their own.
Podcast clip meaning
The point of a clip is that someone who has never heard the show gets something complete in under a minute and a half: a story, a hot take, a funny exchange, a useful answer. The excerpt is chosen because it works alone. That is the difference between a clip and a random slice of audio.
Some podcast apps offer their own way to share a short excerpt. That is one product feature, while the general term covers any cut made to share on social. This page uses the general meaning, which is also what a clipper produces.
What makes an excerpt a clip
- It starts on a sentence that makes sense cold, not on "as I was saying".
- It holds one idea. Two topics in 60 seconds usually means two clips or none.
- It ends when the point lands, not when the guest finishes the thought.
- It has captions, because many people watch with the sound off.
- It fits the screen it will be watched on, usually a vertical 9:16 frame.
How long and how many
KeyMo offers four clip-length settings, which map well to how clips are used.
| Setting | Length | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | 15-90 seconds | Letting each moment set its own length |
| Short | 20-40 seconds | A single punchy line or reaction |
| Medium | 40-60 seconds | A short story or a two-part answer |
| Long | 60-90 seconds | An explanation that needs room |
YouTube Help says Shorts can be up to 3 minutes long, so a clip can run longer than KeyMo's 90-second ceiling if you cut by hand. Longer is not an aim in itself; a clip should stop when its point does.
| Episode length | KeyMo's built-in target |
|---|---|
| Up to 15 minutes | 3 to 5 clips |
| Up to 30 minutes | 5 to 8 clips |
| Up to 60 minutes | 8 to 12 clips |
| Longer than 60 minutes | Up to 15 clips |
Worked example: a 60-minute episode
A 60-minute interview falls in the "up to 60 minutes" band, so the target is 8 to 12 clips. If the guest tells two good stories, gives one sharp opinion and the rest is warm-up and plugs, expect nearer the low end, or fewer. Set that against the length of the episode: 12 clips at 45 seconds each is 9 minutes of material from 60.
