Facebook Reel size: ratio, resolution and file size

By the KeyMo team · Updated

Meta recommends 1080p, vertical video and .mp4 for organic Facebook Reels, and its composer works in a fixed 9:16 frame. Meta's pages give no pixel size or file-size limit for organic reels. The 1440 x 2560 pixel and 4 GB figures belong to Reels ads. KeyMo exports 9:16 clips at 1080x1920, which fits the organic recommendation.

Organic Facebook Reel specs Meta states

Facebook Reels ad specs are a different set

Meta publishes separate numbers for paid placements. Do not mix them with the organic ones.

Meta Ads Guide, Awareness Video Ad Specs on Facebook Reels, checked 11 October 2026.

Maximum file size4 GB

That 4 GB figure answers many searches for Facebook Reels file size, but it is an ad limit. For organic reels see the next section.

What Meta does not state

  • An exact pixel size for organic reels. The Requirements page says only "1080p".
  • A file-size limit for organic reels.
  • A maximum bitrate for organic reels.
  • A safe zone for organic reels. Only ads have percentages.

Our recommendation where Meta is silent: export 1080x1920, and borrow the ad safe zone as a cautious guide. On a 1920-pixel-tall frame, 14% is about 269 pixels at the top and 35% is 672 at the bottom, and 6% of the 1080-pixel width is about 65 on each side. That is arithmetic on Meta's ad guidance, not an organic rule.

Meta's tips page also lists what makes a reel less discoverable: blurry low-resolution video, visible watermarks from other apps, a border around the video, and horizontal video. On screens taller than 9:16, Meta says an ad may be zoomed to fill the screen or shown with black bars, so keep key text off the edges.

FAQ

What size should a Facebook Reel be?

Meta recommends 1080p, and the composer uses a fixed 9:16 frame, so 1080x1920 is the usual vertical size. Meta's pages do not print 1080x1920 for organic reels, so that is our reading of 1080p.

What is the best aspect ratio for Facebook Reels?

9:16. Meta's tips say to use vertical video, and ads list 9:16 as recommended. The composer also accepts 16:9 and 1:1, but horizontal is listed among things to avoid.

Is there a file size limit for Facebook Reels?

Meta's Requirements page does not give one for organic reels. The only figure we found is 4 GB for Reels video ads, so do not treat it as an organic limit.

Which video codec and frame rate does Facebook Reels want?

Meta recommends H.264 or H.265 at 24 to 60 FPS, and lists VP9 and AV1 as supported. KeyMo's 30 fps H.264 output sits inside that range.

Can I upload a landscape clip as a Facebook Reel?

Yes, since Meta says reels can be any orientation. It still advises vertical and lists horizontal video as less discoverable, so a podcast clip is better reframed to 9:16 first.
