Church sermon shorts: turn one Sunday message into a week of clips

By the KeyMo team · Updated

To make church sermon shorts, take Sunday's recording, find the 30 to 90 second moments that stand alone, caption them and post one a day with a link to the full message. Keep worship music and anyone's story out unless you have cleared them. KeyMo scores and cuts vertical sermon clips from the full video.

The moments that make good sermon clips

A sermon is built to be heard whole, so most of it does not clip. A few parts do. The best sermon clips are the ones where a person who never heard the first half of the message still understands it and wants the second half. Look for these:

Moments that work as church sermon clips
MomentWhat to listen forLength to try
The one-sentence takeawayThe line the pastor repeats or slows down forShort (20-40 s)
An illustration or storyA real-life scene with a beginning and an endLong (60-90 s)
Answering a hard question"People ask me whether..." followed by a direct answerMedium (40-60 s)
Plain explanation of a passageThe pastor explaining what a verse meant, in ordinary wordsMedium (40-60 s)
A practical step for the weekSomething a viewer can do on MondayShort (20-40 s)

Skip the greeting, announcements, offering and the build-up to the main point. Those make a good service and a weak clip. If a clip opens with "as we saw earlier", it needs the earlier part, so choose a different moment.

Lengths, captions and what shows on screen

KeyMo has four length choices: Auto (15-90 seconds), Short (20-40), Medium (40-60) and Long (60-90). For a church feed, Medium is a good starting point because it gives a thought room to finish. Move to Long for a story and to Short for a one-line challenge. YouTube Shorts can run up to three minutes, so the 90-second ceiling fits comfortably; see YouTube Shorts length for the platform numbers.

  • Captions are the main text. KeyMo captions word by word and has 12 styles, or none. Pick a readable one and use it every week so the feed looks like your church.
  • Check names, places and any biblical or theological terms in the captions before posting; transcripts stumble on unusual words.
  • Put the speaker, the church name or the message series in the post caption instead of cluttering the video.
  • Leave the first second free of logos, so the opening line has the screen.

Preview a clip in two styles and keep the one that reads better on a phone held at arm's length. There is more on choosing in word-by-word captions.

What to leave out: music, minors and personal stories

  • Worship music. A song is a creative work, and the Copyright Office says using a more creative work is less likely to support fair use. YouTube also says a claimed Short that is between one and three minutes long is blocked while the claim is active. If your church holds the licence for its own recordings, check what that licence covers before posting; if you are not sure, cut the clip where the talking is.
  • Guest speakers. If a visiting preacher is not part of your church, ask before clipping them. Permission is a licence from the owner, and your church may not be the owner of that talk.
  • Children and congregants. A camera on the room catches faces. Check your own church's consent practice before a recognisable person, especially a minor, ends up in a public clip.
  • Testimonies and prayer requests. Someone telling a painful story from the front agreed to share it with a congregation, not the internet. Ask them first.
  • Quotes without their setting. A line lifted out of a longer argument can mean the opposite. Check the sentence before and after the cut.

A weekly workflow for a media team

  1. Sunday: export the recording as an MP4 or MOV, or paste the YouTube link of your stream. Trim to the sermon if you can, because source minutes are counted on the length you upload.
  2. Monday: choose Medium to start. KeyMo returns scored clips, each with a score out of 10 and a one-line reason, and keeps only 7 or higher. For a 45-minute message the target is 8 to 12.
  3. Monday: watch each clip once with the sound on. Read the captions. Delete any with music, a stranger's face or a half-finished thought.
  4. Use the chat editor to tighten a start or end. Edit mode accepts clips from 15 seconds to 10 minutes.
  5. Tuesday to Saturday: post one clip a day, each with a pointer to where the full message lives.
  6. Next Sunday: repeat. Download the ZIP of everything for your archive; clips are kept for 30 days and the source file for 7.

Four Sundays of 45-minute messages is about 180 source minutes, inside the 300 on Starter at $12 a month. There is no free plan. See pricing. For cutting church video clips out of any long recording, read how to clip part of a podcast.

Hook angles for sermon video clips

  • Open on the hard question: "Is it okay to be angry at God?" Then let the pastor answer it.
  • Open on the everyday picture: the pastor's first sentence of the story, before the lesson.
  • Open on the dare: "Try this for seven days." Make sure the clip says what it is.
  • Open on the misunderstanding: "Most of us read this verse wrong." Only if the clip explains why.
  • Open on a plain promise: the shortest honest summary of what the next 40 seconds hold.

Whatever the opening, the clip should do what its first line says. Church audiences notice when a title promises more than the message gives. If you want a generator built for this, see the sermon clip generator page.

FAQ

How long should a short sermon clip be?

Between 20 and 90 seconds, depending on the moment. A single takeaway line fits Short (20-40 seconds), a pastor explaining a passage fits Medium (40-60), and a full story fits Long (60-90). Medium is a safe default.

Can we put worship songs in our church video shorts?

Be careful. Songs are copyrighted, a claim on a Short of one to three minutes on YouTube blocks it, and licences differ by church. Check what your licence covers, or cut clips where only speaking is heard.

How many sermon clips can we get from one message?

KeyMo aims for 8 to 12 clips from a source up to an hour, and 5 to 8 up to 30 minutes. It keeps only clips scoring 7 out of 10 or higher, so a message with few standalone moments returns fewer.

Do we need permission to clip our own sermon?

If your church owns the recording, no outside permission is needed for your own service. Guest speakers, recorded testimonies and volunteers' footage can be different, so check who owns what before posting.

How do we stop a sermon clip losing its context?

Choose moments that make sense on their own, listen to the sentence before and after your cut, and avoid lines that begin with "as we saw earlier". Mention the message series in the post caption so viewers can find the rest.
