Can you post podcast clips on TikTok and YouTube?

By Rakshit · Updated

Yes, as long as you have the right to share the audio and video. TikTok tells users to post only content they created or have the right to share, and YouTube says crediting the owner does not grant rights. Your own show is simple. A guest needs to agree, and someone else's show needs the owner's permission. Then match each platform's format limits.

Step one is rights, not format

Most advice about posting podcast clips starts with captions and hooks. The question that can get an account removed comes earlier: do you have the right to post this recording? Both platforms say it plainly. TikTok's Community Guidelines tell people to post only content they created or have the right to share, and TikTok does not allow content that violates someone else's intellectual property rights. YouTube lists permission from the owner as one of the main ways to use someone else's content, and says crediting the owner does not by itself give you the right.

  1. Your own show: you can post it, provided any music, ads or clips of other people inside the episode are also yours to use.
  2. A guest on your show: get their agreement to excerpts in writing before you publish a clip with their voice or face.
  3. Someone else's show: ask the owner. The US Copyright Office says to seek permission from the copyright owner, and that in cases of doubt it recommends obtaining permission.

When you ask, the Copyright Office suggests naming the exact material, how you will use it, the audience, and whether it will be sold. It also notes that only the current owner of that exact material can grant permission, and that the first person you reach may have to point you to an agent. This is general information, not legal advice.

We found no TikTok page that sets a recommended length for a podcast clip. The only length rule we found is the Creator Rewards one: videos must be over 1 minute to earn rewards. So the clip length that suits your goal is your call, not a platform requirement. For YouTube, anything square or vertical and up to three minutes is categorized as a Short.

Uploading podcast clips to YouTube

People often ask whether they can upload podcast clips on YouTube, and the answer is that YouTube allows it with the same rights test. A few YouTube specifics are worth knowing:

  • The Edit into a Short tool picks up to 60 seconds from one of your own public long-form videos. Private, unlisted and third-party claimed videos cannot be used. It is a route for your own show only.
  • Titles are limited to 100 characters. Up to three hashtags from the description appear above the title, and YouTube ignores all hashtags if a video has more than 60.
  • YouTube's spam policy lists re-posting material from other sites without adding something of your own as scraped content, and bans using tools to produce high volumes of near-identical content. Posting a few variations is fine.
  • YouTube's three-minute Shorts page says a Short over one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked, so check for music inside the clip.

Monetization is a separate question with its own gate. We cover it in can you monetize podcast clips on YouTube.

If someone reports your clip

On TikTok, a user outside the EU whose clip is removed for copyright can appeal in the app. TikTok says it will forward the appeal, including any contact details you give, to the original reporter where appropriate and authorised by law, and that the claimant may use it to file a lawsuit. Removed content is deleted after a period and cannot be reinstated afterwards. TikTok bans repeat infringers and may ban an account immediately for severe violations. On YouTube, a claim from an automated match is not a strike, but a valid removal request is. Three strikes in 90 days put a channel at risk of termination.

None of this depends on how short the clip is. For the myth that a few seconds are safe, read how long a clip can be without copyright.

A pre-post checklist

  1. Do I own the recording, or have written permission for this episode and this guest?
  2. Is there music, an ad read or a third-party clip inside the excerpt?
  3. Does the clip add something, such as a framing line, a caption that makes a point, or a cut that gives it a clear start and end?
  4. Is the file within the platform's limits above?
  5. Does the title or caption promise only what the clip delivers? YouTube's spam policy prohibits misleading titles and descriptions.

TikTok and YouTube pages we read do not say how to link to the full episode, so treat any advice on that as a habit, not a rule.

Where KeyMo fits

KeyMo handles the format work. Clips come out vertical at 1080x1920, 30 fps, H.264 and AAC, and you choose the length: Auto runs 15 to 90 seconds, Short 20 to 40, Medium 40 to 60 and Long 60 to 90. It picks up to 15 clips from an episode of 5 minutes to 3 hours, scores each out of 10, and keeps only those scoring 7 or higher. Captions come in 12 styles with word-by-word timing, and every plan exports without a watermark. KeyMo has no free plan and asks you to confirm rights before it imports a YouTube link. Try it on the podcast to TikTok workflow.

FAQ

How long can a podcast clip be on TikTok?

TikTok's Creator Academy says videos up to 60 minutes can be uploaded on TikTok Studio desktop. No page we read sets a recommended clip length, and Creator Rewards only counts original videos over 1 minute.

Do podcast clips need to be vertical for TikTok?

No. TikTok accepts vertical and landscape uploads. If you post landscape, TikTok advises against adding black margins and says full-screen viewing needs a truly landscape video with no text in the margins.

Will YouTube treat my podcast clip as a Short?

It will if the video is square or vertical and up to three minutes long. To keep a video out of Shorts, YouTube says to use a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9.

Do I need permission to post clips from a podcast I do not host?

The Copyright Office's general rule is to seek permission from the copyright owner, and it recommends getting permission in cases of doubt. Both platforms can remove content and penalize repeat infringers.

What happens if TikTok removes a podcast clip for copyright?

You can ask the rights holder for a retraction or appeal in the app. Removed content is eventually deleted for good, and repeat infringers can lose their accounts.
