How long should a video clip be?
By the KeyMo team · Updated
For clips cut from a podcast or interview, 20 to 60 seconds fits the posting limits of every major short-form platform, and 90 seconds is the top of KeyMo's range. No platform publishes a best length. They publish limits, so the right length is the one where the idea finishes. This page lists those limits and KeyMo's own presets, with the date each was read.
What this page counts, and what it does not
"Video clip" can mean a testimonial, a sports highlight or a holiday video. This page is about one case: a short vertical clip cut from a longer podcast, interview or talk and posted to a short-form feed.
It states only two kinds of number. The first is limits and guidance from the platforms' own help pages, read on 11 October 2026. The second is the length rules built into KeyMo. It does not contain a measured study of which clip length performs best, because neither the platforms nor KeyMo have published one that we can point to.
The four length settings in KeyMo
When you start a job, you pick one of four length settings. Each is a range the clip finder works inside. These are settings, not results: they tell you what KeyMo will cut, not how those clips will perform.
| Setting | Clip length | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | 15 to 90 seconds | You have no strong view and want the finder to size each clip to the idea. |
| Short | 20 to 40 seconds | One point or one answer, with little setup. |
| Medium | 40 to 60 seconds | A short story or a point with an example. |
| Long | 60 to 90 seconds | An argument that needs setup and payoff. |
Every clip leaves as 9:16 video at 1080x1920, so the length you choose is the only format decision left. The setting applies to the whole job; to compare lengths on the same episode, run it twice. Upload rules are separate: source files run from 5 minutes to 3 hours.
What the platforms say about clip length
Most platforms publish a maximum and say little about an ideal. The rows below are what each one's own pages state. For the full detail on one platform, see YouTube Shorts length, Instagram Reels length and TikTok video length.
| Platform | What it states | Kind of figure |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts | Up to 3 minutes; square or vertical video up to 3 minutes uploaded on or after 15 October 2024 is classed as a Short | Limit |
| Instagram Reels | Record and edit up to 20 minutes; reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences | Limit plus a reach line |
| Facebook Reels | No minimum or maximum length. Meta's creator guidance links 10 to 30 second reels to reach and 30 seconds to 3 minutes to engagement | No limit; advice |
| TikTok | Uploads of up to 60 minutes in TikTok Studio on desktop | Limit |
| Member video up to 15 minutes, at least 3 seconds from desktop | Limit | |
| Snapchat Spotlight | Posting needs 5 seconds or more; earning revenue from ads on Spotlight needs 30 seconds or more | Minimums |
The useful reading is what these numbers leave open. Every platform above accepts a clip of 20 to 90 seconds, so none of them forces your length. The choice is about the viewer.
How the score cut-off and clip count interact with length
Length is only one of the rules KeyMo applies. Every clip gets a score out of 10 and a one-line reason, and only clips scoring 7 or higher are kept. A weak episode therefore returns fewer clips than a strong one, whichever length you pick.
| Source video | Target clips |
|---|---|
| Up to 15 minutes | 3 to 5 |
| Up to 30 minutes | 5 to 8 |
| Up to 60 minutes | 8 to 12 |
| Longer than 60 minutes | Up to 15 |
Worked example: a 45-minute interview sits in the "up to 60" row, so the target is 8 to 12 clips. If only 6 moments score 7 or higher, you get 6 clips, not 8. Choosing a longer setting does not lower that bar. It changes where each clip starts and ends. There is a hard cap of 15 clips per video, and the guide to extracting clips from a video covers the rest.
A decision rule for choosing a setting
- Posting the same file to YouTube Shorts, Reels and TikTok: use Short or Medium. Both sit well under every limit in the table, and under the 3-minute reach line.
- The speaker answers a question in one go: use Short (20 to 40 seconds).
- The speaker tells a story with a turn at the end: use Medium or Long, and check the clip does not stop before the turn.
- You post to Snapchat Spotlight and want the 30-second revenue minimum: use Medium or Long. Short runs 20 to 40 seconds, so some clips fall below 30.
- You do not know yet: use Auto, then look at which lengths your best-scored clips fall in and set that range next time.
If you start from a YouTube episode, the long video to Shorts workflow explains how the finder picks moments before length is applied.
How far can you trust these numbers?
- High trust: maximum lengths, minimums and classification rules quoted from a platform page.
- Medium trust: platform guidance such as Meta's 10 to 30 second reach advice. It is advice, not a spec, and the page gives no data behind it.
- Not claimed: any figure for views, completion rate or follower growth by clip length. None is on an official page we read.
