How to repurpose video content into a week of short clips

By Rakshit · Updated

To repurpose video content, pick one long video that has complete spoken ideas, cut it into vertical clips of 15 to 90 seconds, add captions, post a few clips a week and link each one back to the full video. AI can find and cut the moments. Choosing, posting and linking back stay with you.

Why one long video should not be one upload

A 45-minute interview costs hours to plan, record and edit, and then it gets one upload and one thumbnail. Inside it are a dozen moments that would stand alone, and almost nobody sees them because they are buried at minute 23. To repurpose video content is to pull those moments out and give each one its own short, vertical, captioned file.

This guide covers video only. It does not cover turning a talk into a blog post or a newsletter, which is a different job with different tools. If your source is a podcast, the same steps apply, and the podcast content repurposing guide adds the audio-side formats.

Step 1: pick a source that deserves the effort

Not every video repurposes well. The test is simple: can a stranger understand a 40-second slice without having seen the rest? That is true of people talking in complete thoughts and rarely true of a tutorial where the meaning sits on the screen.

  • Good sources: interviews, panels, talks, webinars, Q&As, finished live streams, podcast episodes recorded on camera.
  • Weak sources: screen recordings, slideshows and music videos, where a clip needs the picture to make sense.
  • Rights first: use video you own or have permission to cut. Crediting the owner does not turn a copy into fair use, YouTube says on its help page, and the U.S. Copyright Office says no formula makes a set number of seconds safe.

Step 2: cut for moments, not for minutes

Cut where an idea starts and ends, then check the length. Platforms are generous here. YouTube categorises square or vertical videos up to three minutes as Shorts, and Instagram says it recommends videos of three minutes or less to people who do not follow you yet. In practice the better clips are shorter than the limit, because a single idea rarely needs more than a minute.

Clip length choices in KeyMo
Clip lengthKeyMo rangeGood for
Short20 to 40 secondsOne sharp point, a joke, a hot take
Medium40 to 60 secondsA small story or a stated opinion with a reason
Long60 to 90 secondsAn explanation that needs a setup and a payoff
Auto15 to 90 secondsLet the tool pick per moment

Doing this by hand means scrubbing the whole file, which is why most people stop after two clips. This is the step AI helps with most. KeyMo scores every candidate out of 10 with a one-line reason and keeps only clips that score 7 or higher, so a weak video gives you fewer clips rather than filler.

Step 3: reformat and caption

A clip cut from a 16:9 video needs to become 9:16 with the speaker in the middle of the frame. Do not fake it with black bars: YouTube advises against adding padding or black bars to the video itself, and TikTok gives the same advice for landscape uploads. Reframe the shot instead.

Then add captions, because many people watch short video with the sound off. Word-by-word captions that match the speaker keep the eye moving. KeyMo offers 12 caption styles plus a no-captions option, face-tracking 9:16 reframe, and trims silences. Each clip comes out at 1080x1920, 30 fps, with no watermark on any plan.

Upload an MP4 or MOV of 5 minutes to 3 hours, up to 10 GB, or paste a YouTube link on a paid plan. Starter is $12 a month for 300 source minutes and Pro is $29 a month for 900. There is no free plan. FAQ

Can AI repurpose video content on its own?

AI can find moments, cut them to vertical, and caption them. It cannot decide whether you have the rights, which clips fit your audience, or where to post. Treat its output as a ranked shortlist you review.

How do I repurpose content without redoing all the work?

Make the long video once, then run the same four steps every time: pick, cut, caption, post. Repeating one process is faster than inventing a new format for each platform.

How many clips can one video give me?

It depends on the video. KeyMo's built-in targets are 3 to 5 clips from a video up to 15 minutes and 8 to 12 up to 60, with up to 15 for longer ones. Weak episodes return fewer.

Do I need to edit every clip by hand?

Not usually. Captions, reframing and silence trimming are done for you. You review each clip, and if one needs a change you open it in the chat editor and say what to change.

Can I repurpose someone else's video?

Only with permission from the owner, and even then YouTube expects significant original value added. Credits and disclaimers do not replace permission. Ask first, and keep the reply.
