What is an Instagram Reel?
By the KeyMo team · Updated
An Instagram Reel is a short video you make or upload on Instagram, designed mainly for vertical viewing and edited with audio, text and effects. Instagram accepts ratios from 1.91:1 to 9:16, a 30 FPS minimum, and recording up to 20 minutes, but it recommends videos of 3 minutes or less to people who do not follow you.
Instagram Reel definition and the basics
A Reel is Instagram's format for short video. You can record in the app or upload a file, then add music, text, effects and layout. Meta recommends 9:16 for Reels because most people hold their phones vertically.
| Item | What Instagram says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | Between 1.91:1 and 9:16 for uploads | Instagram Help |
| Frame rate | Minimum of 30 FPS | Instagram Help |
| Resolution | Minimum of 720 pixels | Instagram Help |
| Length | Up to 20 minutes recorded, but Meta's ad and API pages say 15 minutes | Instagram Help vs Meta ad and developer docs |
| Cover photo | 420 x 654 pixels recommended; cannot be edited after upload | Instagram Help |
The length figures disagree, so check what the app lets you do before planning around a limit. A 90-second figure appears in the pages read only as a rule for boosting a Reel.
Reels vs YouTube Shorts
| Instagram Reel | YouTube Short | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum length | 20 minutes per Instagram Help | 3 minutes |
| Shape | Ratios from 1.91:1 to 9:16 | Square or vertical |
| Wider reach | Recommended to unconnected audiences at 3 minutes or less | Shorts feed personalised to the viewer |
See the YouTube Shorts page for that side, and short-form video for the general term.
Audio and reuse
- When a Reel is posted on a public account, anyone on Instagram can make a Reel using its original audio. The owner can turn this off for Meta AI apps and websites in settings.
- Instagram says audio tracks in posts can become muted when music rights agreements change, though the post stays viewable.
- A Reel can have up to 20 audio tracks in the in-app editor.
Example: a podcast moment as a Reel
Take a 45-second moment from a podcast. Vertical 9:16 at 1080x1920 and 30 fps clears Instagram's stated minimums of 30 FPS and 720 pixels. The first 3 seconds still have to work, since Instagram's advice for creators asks for an engaging start. The route from a long recording to this clip is in podcast to Reels.
Decision rule: if the clip is under 3 minutes, it fits Instagram's recommendation for unconnected audiences. If it is longer, expect it to reach mainly people who follow you.
Common mistakes
- Planning around a single length figure when Instagram's own pages give two.
- Posting a horizontal file inside a vertical frame. Meta recommends 9:16 for Reels placements.
- Uploading below 720 pixels or under 30 FPS, the stated minimums.
- Putting captions where the interface covers them. Meta gives ad safe-zone percentages, not organic ones.
Where KeyMo touches it
KeyMo exports vertical 1080x1920 clips at 30 fps with no watermark, which meets the minimums above. You post them yourself. For specifics on length see Instagram Reels length.
